Spanish past tense stem changes?

Im starting to learn the preterite and the Imperfect tense and Im not sure of the stem changes in either one. I know in the preterite both the AR and IR verbs dont change their stems. but the the IR verbs do if that is right. but what about the imperfect, do the AR ER and IR verbs stem changes at all?
