Palm pre hacks and homebrew apps?

I have a Palm Pre. I want to jailbreak it so I can put more apps on it b/c the approved apps suck. I don't want to start messing with it though if the steps required only work in older versions. I always update my phone so it has the latest WebOS. Has anyone hacked their phone w/o any problems? I can't find any straightforward answers on Pre Forums about whether or not you can hack any version. They only warn that if something goes wrong, you void your warranty and the phone's usually unfixable. If you can provide personal experience or a link, that'd be great. Personal opinions won't help me out much.
